My distant cousin through his maternal side. While doing genealogical research, I found out how he'd passed away. I'd never heard of the Winecoff Hotel fire before today. I am deeply saddened to hear of so many lives lost, especially all of the young men and women from Georgia High Schools. But, from the horror, good came and now lives are protected because of their sacrifice.
Charles Keith, Rome High School, was the son of Myrtle & Cleveland Keith. Myrtle Keith was my maternal grandmother's (Pearl Blackstock Atkinson) first cousin. Myrtle & Cleveland lost two of their three children. Their daughter survived. Unfortunately, this horrific tragedy left Myrtle a broken and grieved lady for the rest of her life, according to my Grandmother.
Their other son was the first from Floyd County to die in WWII at Guadalcanal. Myrtle now is at peace with her beloved earthly family in Heaven and rests on Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Rome, GA. Posted on Memorial Day, May 29, 2023
