Marianne Scherle was the much-beloved only child of Marianne and Gottfried Scherle, who had immigrated from Germany to Albany, Georgia, before World War II. They lived across the street from us on Second Avenue and attended the same church. My mother often talked about the horror of the morning the Scherles awoke to learn the Winecoff was burning and raced to Atlanta, not knowing what they would find. I still have a framed copy of this picture, which was in our living room throughout my childhood. The Scherles moved to California in the early 1950s, and she died during a visit to Germany in 1973. Their ashes are buried next to Marianne at Crown Hill Cemetery in Albany.
